Drew-The Music Man

Drew had to miss the weekend at Newport Dunes, so this post is of him. Drew is 20 years old, and loves music. He taught himself to play the guitar at age 14 after winning the boat contest at Newport Dunes that we participate in every June. That is a fun carnival sort of thing that the Marina puts on for all of the families that keep boats at the marina. Our family always goes, and makes a day of it. They have wonderful food, dancing, music, games, air jumper for the kids, and a swimming pool with slide, and the big event is a boat building contest. Each team gets about 6 sheets of cardboard, a roll of duct tape, and some exacto knives, and they have to construct a boat that holds two people to navigate through the course that is set up in the bay. The winners make several hundred dollars, to be split among their team. One year, Drew and his cousin Matt were lured away by another team, to pilot their boat. And they WON!!! So with Drew's winnings, he bought a guitar, and spent hours and hours studying the dvd and learning to play. Now, only 6 years later, he plays beautifully. Not only accoustic guitar, but electric (not my fav...too loud!) and harmonica, and is learning keyboards. He also plays worship at our church, and he aspires to incorporate his love of music, together with his desire to somehow work in ministry, into his livelyhood. He hopes to get into the ministry school this fall at our church, called Catalyst. This is a three year program to train those interested in ministry. He will serve at least two missions in third world countries, and serve in all areas of ministry to discover where his strength is. If he gets in, his hope is to gravitate towards music ministries. Here are a few pictures of our "Music Man" where the soft melodies of Jack Johnson, and John Mayer and the like, can be heard on any given day, all for free.

Drew is extremely gifted. I have enjoyed watching him grow up over the years and have enjoyed watching him turn into the incredible man he is today.

How sweet of you to not leave Drew out! I have two lenses...the 18-55 and the 55-200. I was using the 55-200 at the beach. I usually always have that one on.
