First Harvest

Since we have returned from the cruise, it has been cold and raining!  Crazy that we had hot sunshine the whole time.  My garden is loving the rain though.  This is my first harvest.
One zucchini, one yellow squash, boxwood basil, sweet basil, sage, thyme, mint, and lots of radishes.   Pretty soon, I will go out each night and pick our veggie for dinner.
Here is my girl standing by my garden.  I think she missed me!  She is still coughing, and off her feet a bit.  No egg laying yet, and not a huge appetite. But she is drinking, and scratching for bugs.  And today I caught her in my garden going to town in the soft earth!  I guess I forgot to close the gate when I was out there, and she mosied on in.
When we got home from our trip, I had to move the chicklets to another pen.  They were getting so big, and so messy!  They were making my sewing room a tad stinky too.  So, I turned the kiddos Little Tyke's playhouse into a temporary coop.
I taped the windows on the front door up, and also taped the gaps in the shutters closed to keep them extra warm.  And Mr. G helped me put their heat lamp out there, and cover up the "coop" with a tarp since rain was forecast.  I was kind of worried the next morning, but when I went out to check on them, they were roasty toasty, and happy as could be.  The floor to the coop didn't even get wet.

They are getting so big!  I will keep them in here for another 3-4 weeks, and then put them in the big coop.  Noah and I went to the feed store today and he was so excited to see their morning shipment of chicks coming in!  They have some breeds I want, so I am thinking of going back on Saturday for more chicklets.  I will keep the chicks in the pack N play until I put Chicas, Ham and Sammy in the big coop, then put the chicklets in the playhouse/coop til they are feathered out.  I know, I have lost it!  I have gone plum Chicken crazy!
See, you don't even need a real coop if you just want to have one or two chickens.  An old playhouse works great!  Or you could use a shed with a few simple modifications, or any number of things would work.  Why oh why, didn't I do this years ago?
I spent 5 hours scraping wallpaper off of my laundry room walls today.  And a few weeks ago, Eri's David came over to help me for a few hours.  We worked hard and only got a tiny bit done.  Today I finished the entire laundry room, and I think my fingers need ice!!!  I will NEVER put wallpaper up again!!!   Now I need the wall retextured and then I will paint it.  What a relief to have that done!  I have been putting it off forever.  I have one more room to do, only half way up, and it will come off easily.  I better start picking paint colors!
See you soon.

I have seriously been thinking of figuring out where I can put some chickens myself! I have to do a bit of planning...maybe it's a possibility!

Your life is so much more exciting than mine! Chickens in the playhouse, you are one weird Mama, I think that's one of the main reasons that I love you. Wish I were there to help with the wallpaper, I think it helps to drink a lot of wine when you're doing that. Just a tip.

What a good idea on using the playhouse...you've turned into a regular chicken farmer, haha! Glad you've finished the wallpaper removal chore...oh the stories I could tell you of mine. Have a wonderful day Kris!

Yay for all the yummy vegetables and herbs! I would love to do a garden and be able to go out and pick something for dinner. That is awesome! Love the baby chicks too! My dad is raising some baby chicks right now too, seems like so much work but it will be worth it!
