This, That & The Other

Hallelujah.....it never broke 90 degrees today!!!!!  I didn't think it would ever happen.  An 89 degree day may seem hot to some folks, but after the summer we have had, it was almost chilly!!!  I have my windows open, and am enjoying a nice breeze.  Something we have not been able to do for weeks. 
This morning I was out hanging clothes on the line, and heard the familiar cackle that a chicken makes after she has laid an egg.   It is something I am very used to hearing.  But this morning it was odd, because it sounded closer.  Hmmmmm?  I decided to go investigate.  Sure enough, it was closer alright.  Instead of laying their eggs in the chicken coop, using one of the two boxes I have placed in there for their use,   I found Big Red (which seems to now be her appointed name) one of my new chickens from my friend Elaine , sitting snug as a bug in a bed of leaves beneath a corner hibiscus bush in the corner of the backyard by the garage.  I went in to get my camera to take a picture.

 And then I left her alone to do what chickens do.  By the time my clothes were out on the line, she had gotten up so I went to retrieve her egg.  There was not one egg, but two.  Apparently, Blue, or Bloom as Noah calls her, has chosen this spot for her nest to lay eggs as well.

I had to go into the house to find something to reach them with.

Thanks girls.  But can't you just lay them in the box?  I had to laugh the other day when I was reading my comments on a blog post.  Someone said that they were surprised my chickens weren't laying hard boiled eggs with the heat we are having!  I thought that was a riot!

With the break in the weather, and a forecast that is promising temperatures in the 70's the rest of the week, I decided to get my October quilts out today.   Let's go in through the front door.  Come on in.

   I made this Log Cabin Jack and Ghost many  years ago.  I quilted it on my home machine.

This Halloween Cat is from a line called Button Ups.  There is a base quilt you make that has the block border, and a different pattern for every month of the calendar year.  I have only done October, November and December.  I need to get busy and finish the rest of the months.

The family room in our house has very limited options for furniture placement.  One entire wall is a rock fireplace.  One wall is french sliding door. 
And the only place for our wall until that holds the telly is on a wall that does not work well for viewing the fireplace in the winter months.  We love to have our roaring fires, and so for the past few years, I have been moving the big easy chair over to the fireplace and it has turned into the favorite place to sit.

The quilt that lays on the back of the chair was a gift to me from my friend Jae.  I love this quilt.  But I especially love the words that she put on the label.

We haven't had a fire  yet, and won't until probably Halloween, but I love the room this way.  It is so cozy.

I wish I hadn't turned that light on, it makes the picture all washed out.  The Fall runner on the hearth is one I made when I first began to quilt about 15 years or so ago.  The barn red table you see in the foreground, is a child's desk  I bought at a thrift shop and refinished for my grandchildren.  It was originally a princess table.  The seat folds in underneath the table and makes it very compact.  The desk top opens and I put a chalk board surface on the top, and a magnetic surface on the bottom for magnetic letters and numbers.  Obviously, they have kind of outgrown it now, and I use it in the house as a table.  I have a family vintage suitcase on it and some frames, with a table topper that I made a few years ago, displayed on the front.

The basket next to the chair with a Bloomie on top, holds my current knitting project.  This is a great spot to knit and crochet.
Tonight is the night that we light The Great Pumpkin!  Always exciting to see!   And I leave you with a picture from last year.  I have not made my Fall wagon up just yet.
