Back Home

Here it is Monday, the beginning of yet another week.  We are back home now.  We left Big Bear about 2:00 yesterday afternoon, and had to come down the back way due to a wreck that was blocking traffic for our usual route.  We wound up not going out on the boat with Ron and Sue.  We woke up and had a leisurely morning.  Greg took a walk, and I sat out on the deck and finished knitting the dishcloth I started the other day.  I love this yarn!!!  It is Cotton Ease, by Lion.  50% cotton and 50% acrylic.  It knitted up so nice, and I love the weight of it.
Greg cooked breakfast for us outside on the bbq.
He had brought up a dozen of our fresh eggs from home.  These eggs are the best.  I will never tire of them.
He cooked the bacon outside, so there wouldn't be a mess on the stove, and I got the eggs all whisked up for him.  I had some fresh fruit, and English Muffins.  And we had bought a caramel apple dumpling from Blanca the day before.  Oh my gosh, I cannot even tell you how delicious these are!!!
Greg said we had a "Feast In The Forest."
It WAS too!
When we got home, there was a lot to do.  After greeting the doggins' who missed us terribly, I had to go do some work in the garden.
 And tend to my chickens.
As well as do several loads of laundry, and water everything, as it had been hot here!
Here are the vintage sheets I got while thrifting in Big Bear City.  They are all washed and line dried, and ready to put away, until I have the right project for them
Today, I had to do the usual things.  Grocery shop, clean and finish laundry.  It was a busy day, but a good day.  I was making a macaroni salad for dinner, and so I needed to hard boil some eggs.  I have recently read about a method to hard boil the eggs of your own chickens, that will make the shells easy to peel.  If you have chickens, or buy farm fresh eggs, you know that trying to peel them is next to impossible!!!  The fresh eggs just don't peel easily.  You need icky old eggs if you want to be able to peel them without messing up the egg!   But I read on http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/  that to prevent this problem, you can steam your eggs, and they will peel perfectly for you!  So, I tried it tonight.
Placed the eggs in the steamer basket of my double steam pan.  Brought the water to a rolling boil.  Put lid on, and set timer for 10 minutes.  I rinsed and cooled them, and then began to see if this was true or not.  YEA....it worked!  Not a single egg was lost!!  And not only did they peel easily, the peels come off in nearly one piece!!  No need to add vinegar, or baking soda, or anything else to the water.  I am SO glad that I read this, and tried it!!!
Macaroni Salad always reminds me of summer!  It is a family favorite here.
Geeps barbequed some hot dogs for us.
YUMMY!!!
I prepared some of the garden fresh squash to bbq too. Drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with sea salt.  So good!  I diced up some sweet onion, tomato, and dill pickle to add to our hot dogs.   Simple, but so yummy!
Tonight after I had done the watering and taken care of all of the animals, I was dragging the raft to the shallow end of the pool to put away.  It was getting dark, and I was not paying attention.  I missed the concrete, as I was rounding the curve of the pool.  I went down, with the back side of my left leg scraping the concrete edge on the pool.  And with a whoosh, I was under water, after  having hit my right knee HARD on the deck. I went in with a big splash!  I was not sure what I had hurt.  My knee was hurting from hitting it on the deck, and the back side of my left leg was scraped all the way down!  I lay in the water, hanging onto the raft, still unsure if I was really hurt.  My son came running out to assist me.  I heard him say, "Dad, Mom is hurt"  And guess what, Greg never even came out to check on me.  I guess he is used to his klutzy wife getting hurt.  Yes, I do it often.  I am a klutz!  The pool was delightfully warm, so I just floated in the water until I felt like I could climb out.  Greg did come out with a towel for me!  I wasn't hurt bad.  Just banged my knee and scraped my leg.   It was a busy day.  And now it is time for me to go lay heady down.
Night-Night.

Oh my gosh...glad you are okay! I have been a klutz all my life too!
Your feast in the forest looks soooo good and so does your dinner at home. I'm hoping to try your grilled squash soon. Brady and I planted a teeny container garden...I need to blog about that. You would be so proud of us! :)

Oh Kris, I'm so glad you are OK. How do these things happen? I have become a klutz too, especially as I have gotten older. I think we have so many things in our mind to do that we rush around and then miss step. Take care and slow down, look who's talking.
Your time away sounded very nice, hope it is what you needed, maybe you can get away soon again. I don't think I have ever had a really fresh egg, but I buy organic cage free at the food store.
Love catching up with you, xoRobin

Girl you about gave me a heart attack! That's so scary. I am such a klutz that I know it's just a matter of time before I do that myself. Hope you didn't wake up with a headache this morning. That's a great tip about the eggs, I'm wondering if I could use the steamer basket in my ricer cooker to do this. I buy eggs from a Farmers market and they are so hard to peel. I'll give it a shot. Take care my friend.

Good morning! Sure glad you weren't hurt badly! I try to be soo careful anymore as a fall is just NOT good, but I really seem to have become a bigger klutz the older I have gotten. Your breakfast at big bear looks soo good. How I love to sit outside for breakfast up there. Dinner looked yummy too. I LOVE to bbq veggies. Enjoy your day today Kris!

Kris your food always looks wonderful. And again that garden of yours...such envy. :)

I am such a klutz as well! I fell a few weeks back at the kids school and landed on my hands and knees. It was a real site!! Hope you are not that sore this morning.

Hi Kris,

Goodness! Glad you are okay. I agree with some of the comments above: we are preoccupied (and yes, getting older!) and sometimes the coordination goes kaput! Interesting cooking technique to get the easy peel egg shell! And your mac salad looks delish!! Thanks for sharing!

Oh, my goodness! I hope you aren't sore, today. I have taken more spills in the past 10 years than I ever did when I was young and I was a klutz THEN! I'm so glad you were able to get away, sounds like it was a perfect time. Your salad looks yummy. Macaroni salad always reminds me of my Grandma! Take it easy today and rest that knee!!

Love ya,
Deb

I must know the secret to BBQ bacon and what kind of pan that is. I love bacon and it works on this diet, but I too hate the mess on the stove.

Can't wait to see what you come up with for those sheets. How fun are they?

Have a great week and I do think of you all often, Kate

Your fresh veggies look wonderful, as do the eggs. I had heard about steaming them but when I tried it...no luck. However, I believe I need a true double boiler as mine was too shallow. I will have to hit the thrift stores...I never really need an excuse!

Sorry you fell but I imagine the pool felt good on your injury.

You make me regret I went gluten free, that macaroni salad is to die for....yummy!

Thanks for your lovely comments on my blog, glamping is so fun! Wish you could join me in person.

So many things to comment on- the egg tip, (thank you!), a wonderfully delicious looking breakfast, your busy, busy day. Then there was dinner, beautiful sheets and to end it all a nasty fall which ended in a nice warm float. I'd say you had a very full day my friend! So glad you're fall wadn't wirse.
Blessings,
Betsy

Hi Kris! You sure had a busy day.. I love the idea of bbq-ing bacon! I am so wanting some of that macaroni salad.. I am known for mine too and it looks a lot like yours. Maybe you could tell us what you put in it? Sorry you fell and hurt yourself.. hope the scrape isn't awful and that you won't have effects from it on your knee. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
