Trial Topsy Turvy

I did a topsy turvy trial run today. I have never made a topsy cake before. What fun! I used only ingredients I had at home. No run to the cake shop for fondant or dowels, or buttercream. I was able to eek out enough of the vanilla buttercream to give a crumb coat to the topsy's and also this one little leftover guy on my pretty plate. It is a really thin coat, but Drew won't care! I baked two strawberry cakes...oh my did they ever smell good cooking, and they tasted even better. I also did one yellow cake. All had coconut cream filling, because I had some! I didn't have enough fondant to do any more decorating on the bottom tier. And I didn't even bother with putting it on a proper cake board. I used leftover board from the Tiffany Cake I did recently. Greg will be taking it in to work with him tomorrow, so I wrote them all a little note on the cake board. This was a fun, fun process, and I can't wait to do more of them. I have three cake orders pending........so I may be doing some experimentation. Fondant is way tricky to work with. And getting it to lay flat is no easy task. I can see it will take some practice!

Turned out great!!! I've been trying to come up with excuses to make a topsy turvy cake, but it's so much cake that I never want to waste it all. Your's turned out so good how fun is that???

Thanks Kristi. I wish I had had more fondant to do more with it. But that was all I had. I would have made patterns on the top and bottom tiers, lined the lower with balls, and made fondant imprints for wire curls to the top. Next time. Fun, fun, cake!
Hey, don't you sleep? Me neither!

I love those cakes! The place where we got our wedding cake makes cakes like that, you should look at their website, you could totally do the same thing!!!

Haha!! Kris you are funny! I know you would have done a ton more with it, you always do! It was a trial run though, and fondant is so much fun to work with, it's like play dough!! I'm trying desperatly to think of an excuse now to make one, I researched it a while back, I can't wait. Once again, yours is totally cute!!!! Love it!

What a fun cake. I love the topsy turvy look. I'd really love to learn more about fondant and how to do that...maybe another time.

Lauri,
Do you have a cake supply near you where you coud take a class? That is really the best way to do it. I have much to learn yet with that medium, but if you liked playing with play doh when you were little, you would love fondant!
