I'm curious....who irons out there?

I was talking to someone recently and made the comment that I was behind on my ironing. She looked at me like I was from Mars and said, "WHAT....you iron....WHY?" Then asked me, what do you iron? I said everything that needs it! She said I was not doing my husband or kids any favors by doing, and having done, their ironing. So, I wonder, who irons out there? I do, and I do it because I always have. And I guess it just doesn't bother me to do so. And because, I think our clothes look so much nicer pressed! But seriously, I usually keep up on it, and iron a couple garments at a time. I have been busier than ever lately, and have let it stack up. And when that happens, I do not enjoy ironing. Especially with a foot that aches like crazy when I am standing! I suppose I could take some of these things that I iron to the cleaners and have it done there, but I don't do that, primarily because I find ironing kind of relaxing. So I ask you.....who out there irons? Oh, and by the way, I am ironing on an ironing board that was a wedding gift 30 years ago! I do need to spring for a new one. And I would love to have a nice thick Cath Kidson ironing board cover in English Roses too!!!
Oh and P.S. I hate to dust!!!!

I iron but I don't like it. I also try to take my stuff out of the dryer immediately and hang it up. But I do iron the items that need it. I'm not against it, but, it's not my fav.

I too, hate to dust.

I'd like to know who "doesn't" iron??? I certainly iron, almost every single day. I don't iron things as I get done with the laundry, I hang them, and Iron right before I go to wear the item. So, almost every morning I iron my clothes for work....and I often iron my sheets too!!
I must say though, you should treat yourself to a new board ;)

I take most of my things out of the dryer quickly as well as to avoid having to iron, but some things need it no matter what, and as I need them, I iron them...Years ago I got into the habit of sending my husbands work shirts out to be done as I had 4 kids and such a busy life it was hard to keep them looking as nice as his job requires them to look. Thinking about it now, I suppose I SHOULD do them myself now as I certainly have the time, but I can't say it is something I enjoy doing very much. Maybe I will give that a little more thought, haha

I don't iron much. Once in a while, but I don't mind it terribly. But dusting? Seriously, you hate it? It's the easiest chore there is.

Genny, I think it has something to do with the grove, because we seem to need to dust EVERY day here! I don't ever remember feeling like that in other homes we have lived in. OH..and I use "pow-pow" when diapering and also after showering, and that adds a ton of dust!

I iron...but I don't "do the ironing." I iron as I need it. Which is the worst way to do it...especially when I'm running late.

My husband irons his own clothes.

And as for an ironing board cover, I just made a new one myself. IT was so easy and a really cheap way to do it. JoAnn sales ironing board cover fabric...the really thick, metalic, quilted kind.

Hey Katie,
maybe I will check out the ironing board fabric at Joann's!!! Good idea!

I iron - actually more than I used to. We had a cheap dry cleaner near us in Orange and so I just took almost everything there. It really reducedthe amount of laundry I had to do also. But now we rarely use the dry cleaner - when we went about a month ago he rmarkedthat we hadn't been there since December 2007! Retirement does have it's pluses!

Aha....you must have gone to the same dry cleaner as my Mom goes to. She says she has a good one in Orange that is cheap! Too far for me though!

This post had me laughing! And then Katies comment on who doesn't iron made me laugh more. I don't! I only only if need be. I take things out of the dryer right away if they tend to wrinkle fast. But I have this white pair of shorts that have to be ironed to make the pockets lay flat and such... thats about ALL I iron. If jason needs something ironed before going somewhere, he does it himslef.

Yuk, I hate to iron but it catches up with me when I don't have anything to wear. I try to take stuff out of the dryer right when the cycle is done.

So many fabrics now don't wrinkle so that helps a little bit.

Hi Kris,
I iron, and like you I think it is relaxing. Finding the time on the other hand is harder than ironing. I find myself ironing every morning before getting dressed. Kevins shirts however, are ironed by strangers and I love them whoever they are.

I totally iron, but I do know people who wont buy anything that needs to be ironed. My hubby does take his dress shirts to the cleaners every week, but thats cuz they just come out so much better. We I was little, I used to do ironing for money for people. Pillow cases are so much nicer ironed.

My mother irons everything including pillow cases. Maybe I'll pay Deb to iron for me.

I found all of your answers interesting! Kelly, you and your friends are of the new generation! You have infant twins, and you are excused from any and all ironing duties!!! I have a friend who irons t shirts...(Michele) and I have also ironed the top part of my flat sheets too, and pillow cases. I love the scented linen sprays too, and I use them alot. If I were rich, I would still iron! But I am not, so we needn's worry.

Hi Kris,
I iron as I need something, like you, standing for long periods of time is hard. I also iron Gregg's shirts because I hate to see him go to work in wrinkles. Nice thing he irons his own shirts too.
I love to use lavender linen water in my iron for my linens, pillow cases & quilting.

OH, this is as good topic. I still think ironing is well worth it. I've heard a lot of people say they take it out of the dryer and it doesn't need ironing. I can tell when something hasn't been ironed. I like the crisp look of a fresh ironed piece of clothing although I don't really enjoy standing for 2 hours and ironing. Dusting doesn't bother me but for some reason I don't like to empty the dishwasher. I find that I often hand wash for several days before I finally empty the dishwasher.
