Eggcellent Weekend

We have had rain most of the day today.  I ran out to check on the chickens this afternoon about 4:00.  Something caught my eye as I glanced towards the laying boxes.  Guess what it was?
One perfect egg.  In the prettiest shade of green.
A nice, smooth, strong shelled, lovely green egg!   I was shocked!  I had nearly given up on my girls.
I only have two that will be green layers.  So it was either Sammy or Chicka's.  I think it was Sammy.  I have seen her in the nest box, and this morning I noticed that the nest box had been quite smooshed.  Is that a word?   But with our cold and rain this weekend, I was not expecting to find an egg!  It is small.  But they will get bigger soon.  Here it is compared to a full sized brown egg I had in the fridge.
I really was beginning to think it would never happen!  But it did!  Finally.  And now I am thinking about making a quiche.  But I am going to be needing a few more of these beauties.
I wonder if there will be another one tomorrow?

Welcome to the Green Egg Club! I just love my Ameracaunas! Ours is named Betsy Ross. Aren't they the prettiest eggs? Some of them lay baby blue and some baby pink eggs. That would be cool! I *love* having chickens!
((hugs)), Teresa :-)

OHHH!!! You're a grandma again!! How exciting, I've been waiting for a post about eggs and I'm so happy for you that you finally are going to be getting some. Congrats! Now maybe the others will get jealous and start laying.

Most chickens lay eggs every 28 hrs. Take it from a former poultry science major :) Long story there, but it involved a scholarship by declaring an obscure major before changing to business.

I am interested now in Janna's poultry science major!

That is such EGGcellent news!!
Hannha was excited to hear that Sammy or Chickas laid that beauty!

When is the quiche going to be ready?

Hi Kris, Oh how exciting for you...hopefully they'll be laying many more in the coming days.
WE've got rain and snow in today's forecast so I'll probably start Jennifer's other book I got-The Aloha Quilt. I hadn't seen this one before either so I assume they are both new. I went to her website and it looks like she is about to release another one called The Wedding Quilt. I love her writing-especially her earlier books.
Have a great Monday. Noreen

YAY, Kris got an egg! There will be more, believe me! I am so glad that it }}finally{{ happened! Doug whacked the mean rooster yesterday. So now we have nine hens and one rooster. He said they all seem happier with the meanie gone.

How fun? Nothing like Green Eggs... except of course with some ham. That's it.. you need to make a quiche with ham and call it Seuss-iche. Great now I'm going to have to go and find that book. Of course, I have all my original Seuss books.

You crack me up. I'd put my first egg on top of a crystal candlestick holder like you did!! How fun and more to come just in time for holiday baking.

I got caught in major hail yesterday as I was traveling at the base of the foothills in Eagle Rock going into Pasadena. So much hail on the window below the wipers that it looked like snow. Fun to have a change in the weather, huh? Gorgeous day today, wish I could be out in the garden. Have a great week!
