I have been so busy lately that finding time to sit down long enough to write a blog post just hasn't happened. When I finally stop for the day, I am exhausted. Have you ever been so tired you just wanted to cry? That is how I feel tonight. Enough whining.....let's sew.
I saw on my friend Debbie's blog a while ago, some flannel baby blankets that she was making with two different flannels, and perfect mitered corners. I asked her what pattern she was using, and she shared the Self Binding Blanket Tutorial This is a very good video tutorial. It makes a nice, soft and cozy two sided flannel baby blanket. The finished size is 36" square. I made mine last night, and loved how it turned out. It was part of a baby gift for a good friend of mine's son and daughter in law. They are having a baby boy.
The lighting was bad for photos! I tried it in another room. Still not showing the true colors though.
I used one of the decorative stitches on my machine to top stitch the two layers together.
The corners turn out with a perfect miter! I love this method!! You use one 40 inch square flannel, and one 30 inch square. So, if you buy 1 1/4 yard of one, and 1 yard of the other, you are set.
Very good tutorial. Very fun project. I bought flannels for two more today. You know, when I was having babies, we used so many receiving blankets. I washed them over and over again. And when I didn't need them for the babies anymore, and our two little girls were playing with dolls, they used them. But now, they are kind of hard to find. So this is a great way to have them, and coordinate them with baby's room.
Thanks so much Debbie for sharing the tutorial. This is a real keeper!!!
Today, I locked my keys in my car! I haven't done that in 25 years! My poor sick daughter had to bring me a spare. I felt so bad.
Go check out the link, and get some blankies made!!!!

How nice kris, I love the receiving blankets! I used mine a lot also when my kids were babies. I usually make mine with 2 flannels and then I crochet the edges, this seems to go a bit faster, I think I'll try one next time. Love it :)
Hi Kris! What a wonderful gift you made! I also loved my flannel receiving blankets I got for all 3 of my babies. Sure faster than crocheting a blanket!
Thanks for your good wishes for hubby.. he's sure in a lot of pain today. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
Your baby blanket makes me wish I knew how to sew! I have a machine, just don't know how to use all the gadgets on it. This will make a nice gift. Take care and try to slow down a bit and take some tlc time for you. Heather
The blanket looks lovely and will be well received and used a lot I am sure. The corners turned out really well didn't they - great job Kris!! xx
Read this laying in bed still wide awake at nearly 5:00 am! I hate nights like this. Anyway, can't see the blanket very well on this tiny phone. Will take a better look later this morning. Sounds like you whipped it up fast. Something you can't do with crochet, that's for sure. Nice to see you post. Now get in your Jammie's and stay home and rest up before you get sick! That's an order. ;)
Love the flannel and the print. I'd like one in my size!
Best,
Bonnie
Kris, thanks so much for sharing that tutorial site. I watched the whole thing and it was great! SO easy and who knew!!!
Your's turned out fabulous and I do remember them from my kids too!
Sorry about your lock out, thank goodness for your sweet daughter : )
Take care, xoRobin
Saw this on Instagram and was hoping you would do a post so I could see more pictures. Great job. They will love it! Sorry Erika is sick, I know that great OJ you gave her will help.
Darling blanket! They will love it! Hope today is a better day, relax and enjoy!
Hugs!

It is so fun to make baby gifts, they are so sweet and usually so easy. Another hit for sure....lovely colors.
Oh I'm totally going to do this the next time I need a baby gift! There are a ridiculous amount of cute baby flannels out there, but I never have a need for them. I might make a stash of these to have on hand and satisfy my need to work with cuteness, haha.
Good morning! I am soo glad you saw the tutorial site Kris, I wasn't sure if you caught that post or not, lol. Isn't it fun? And so quick and easy...right up my alley. And there are so many cute flannel fabrics. Did you see how I did my latest one? I put together a quilt top and quilted it for my 30 inch one, and then attached it to the 40 inch one as usual. SUPER fun, and soo different. I wasn't sure how the heavier piece (after the quilting...I used warm and natural)would work attaching it that way. I was afraid the fabrics wouldn't stay together well, but it worked just fine. Enjoy your week-end Kris!
Hi Kris, I've missed seeing you post, but certainly understand that life gets busy sometimes.
Your baby blanket is just beautiful and I especially like the little decorative stitch you put on it. My machine is a 36 year old Kenmore, (my first Christmas gift from Hubby). It goes forward and reverse and can change stitch length. That's it. But hey, it still works so I'm not complaining.
I used to always use flannel receiving blankets and made a few for Mandy when Piper was born. I'll have to try this pattern sometime.
Blessings,
Betsy
I'm going to pin this. Love the blankies!
So sweet Kris. What a great gift and home made makes it more special. You are right about receiving blankets not being what they used to be. Now get some rest!
Kris,
The blankets are adorable. Don't feel bad about your keys I lose mine like every other day.
Get some rest.

The receiving blankets are darling! I've never been good with mitered corners and this makes it look so easy. Going to have to try it.
Great project Kris. I love the fabrics you chose for the little boy blanket. I love receiving blankets when I had wee ones.
This is a really nice baby gift, Kris! Both my daughter rand I used many receiving blankets when my granddaughter was born, and my favorites were made of flannel as they were so soft and warm.

My iPad would not let me open any of the links that came up so I will have to try it on my laptop. I want to see how they do it.
Hope you feel better soon. I'm doing better each day. Sorry about your keys. Hugs
I have seen this Kris and I think they are just darling! No babies on the agenda here for a while. Yes, we did use a ton of receiving blankets. I don't even think the young uns use them these days. lol! I love the fabrics you chose and the stitch is super cute. Get rested up and don't work yourself so hard. I know, easier said than done!
hugs,
Jann
Adorable! Love that decorative stitch; little stars, yes? Hmmmm...self binding I must check that out. :-)
Thanks for making the time to share your latest project, Kris! The homemade flannel blanket a neighbor made for one of my babies was my favorite and is still being used 33 years after it was made! Thanks too, for the link to the method for how your made yours. Someday I would like to try to make one. ...Am wishing you rest and encouragement. xx
What an adorable blanket, Kris! Love the two patterns and the bright blue decorative stitch! I'm sure they're going to treasure it!

Nice blanket and thank you for sharing the info on the tutorial. One can never have enough blankets with a new baby in the house.
